The Salinas Police Department's Explorer
Program, Post #201, began in the 1960's. Lt. Yoneyama, now
retired, was one of the first S.P.D. Explorers. The program
is supported by the Salinas Police Department, Salinas Police
Athletics League, the Boy Scouts of America.
To qualify as a Salinas Police Explorer,
you must be between the ages of 14 and your 21st birthday.
You must attend 3 to 4 meetings or training events consecutively
and undergo a thorough background check. You must also maintain
a "C" average if still in high school. We meet every
Tuesday from 6:00 P.M. - 8:30 P.M.
Most uniforms, equipment, and training are
provided. You will gain first hand knowledge of how a police
department functions through its daily and always changing
environment.
Some events we regularly participate in are the California
Rodeo (including parades), the Salinas Airshow, the Marina
5k Road Race, and Soledad Fiesta Days. We also work several
different events at Laguna Seca to include the Moto GP and
Spirit West Coast.

Our responsibilities at these
events include parking/traffic control, basic security, and
side by side assistance with members of the Salinas Police
Department and other law enforcement agencies.
Every year the Explorers go on an annual
fun trip. In years past we have gone paintballing, skiing
at Dodge Ridge, Magic Mountain, and camping.
We have competed in competitions involving
Explorers from other departments. We attend the Central Coast
Explorer Competition in Paso Robles, CA. There are other competitions
we compete in where the locations change yearly.

We attend a week long Explorer Academy each
year held in the San Diego area. This is a basic training
academy specifically for Explorers. The academy includes lodging,
food, and uniforms. This is an intense training similar to
that which is attended by actual police recruits.
Thank you for your interest in the Salinas
Police Explorer program. If you are interested in becoming
